Manning benchmarking report

Introduction

• South East Asian based oil producer was seeking to better understand shipping industry HR best practice to inform future HR policy with regard to vessel manning and shore-based staff.

Client Objectives

• Gain insight on standard practice with regard to special purpose vehicle (SPV) management in comparable shipping companies

• Obtain comparisons of best practice in other comparable shipping companies with regard to HR policy and employment practices

• Seek compensation & benefits package comparisons between seafarer and shore-based staff, among comparable shipping companies

Drewry Approach

• Drewry harnessed the knowledge and experience of its Manning and Tanker practices to respond to the issues raised by the client

• A project team was established, made up of consultants from these practices, with particular experience of South East Asian tanker markets

• Drewry utilised established inhouse datasets covering vessel crew and shore-based staff compensation and benefits, while drawing on established shipping industry HR templates and processes

• The assignment also researched best practices in comparable shipping companies

Results Achieved

• Drewry presented a detailed report summarising HR best practice and compensation & benefits packages across comparable shipping companies, together with supporting data appendices and HR templates

• Drewry addressed a number of specific issues of interest to the client including SPV management, cost comparisons between own and agency crew, contracted Vs permanent vessel crews, career paths including sea to shore-based roles, competency assessment and performance management, as well as leave and incentive practices.

• The client was able to use the acquired information to make informed decisions regarding future HR policy.
